Kit list for Cold Weather Arctic Skills Course
- Warm hat, ideally wind-proof and with the ability to protect the ears
- Balaclava in case of extreme cold
- Scarf or headover
- Minimum of 2 sets of quality thermal underwear (Long johns and long sleeved, e.g. merino wool based)
- Minimum of 2 insulative tops (fleece, wool or similar)
- Heavy weight highly insulating jacket (Snugpak softie or similar are highly recommended) A minimum of 2 pairs of insulative trousers (fleece, wool or similar) we recommend the salopette type that
- Windproof and breathable jacket (e.g. ventile, gortex)
- Windproof and breathable overtrousers (a thick rubber band made of bike inner tube can be used to seal over trousers and boots to stop snow entering)
- Multiple pairs of socks (High percentage wool content is HIGHLY recommended, don't choose cotton)
- Pair of thin liner gloves (Fast drying material that allows a relative degree of dexterity) extremely important!
- Insulated leather gloves (e.g. Hestra's)
- Pair of insulative mittens (Wool or similar)
- Windproof and breathable outer mitt (ideally to fit over outer gloves)
- Insulative Wellies or other high leg boots that allow 2 pairs of socks to be worn underneath OR insulated boots of Mukluk style e.g. Sorel Caribou, Baffin's
- Pair of warm trainers or similar to wear when not in boots (in cabin etc.)
- Large rucksack that you can fit all of your kit in
- Day sack (35lt+)
- Arctic rated (-25 deg C) sleeping bag (-40 deg C bags available for hire at £15 per day - let us know in advance if you require these). Alternatively you could combine two 4/5 season bags.
- Breathable bivvy bag or cheap plastic tarp and cordage
- Full length sleeping mat (thick closed cell, available to hire for £3 per day, or Thermarest type mat)
- Head torch and set of spare batteries
- Knife/Fork/Spoon set, mug, mess tin (Plastic or wood is recommended as cold metal sticks to skin!)
- Water bottle (min. 1L)
- Thermos flask
- Notebook, pen/pencil (optional)
- Personal toiletries (Incl. small towel)
- Whistle
- Personal first aid kit containing any medication you require
- Sunglasses and/or goggles
- Suncream (High SPF)
